Minnesota's Youth Waterfowl Day By Matt Lenz, Pro Staff
It only happens two days a year, but can have a lasting impact that carries on for a lifetime. Minnesota's Youth Waterfowl Day can be the one of the greatest experiences of a kid’s life and likely yours. On these two days a licensed adult resident, accompanied by a youth under age 15, can hunt waterfowl without a license. This day provides an awesome opportunity to put kids in a great spot and shoot some waterfowl. The hunters are still required to comply with the hunting seasons, limits, and other regulations; but they will have access to the birds before they start moving south and have a state full of hunters blasting away at them.

Landing the Fish of a LifetimeBy Jason Lenz, Pro Staff
The fish was huge. I could barely make it out, as it was hunkered down near the bottom of the pool. Trout this large don’t come along often and I knew I was going to have to do everything right to have a shot at landing it. The right fly, a precise cast, and the perfect drift all had to come together. When the fish finally sucked in the fly and took off upstream, the battle was just beginning.
Much has been written about fly fishing, fly casting, flies, and gear, but rarely do you read about how to land fish, especially big fish. It is pretty tough to get a picture of that “fish of a lifetime” if you can’t get it in the net. When I first started targeting large trout, I was hooking a lot of fish, but not landing many. It wasn’t until I started watching guys who consistently catch monster trout and tried some new tactics...

Muskies on the FlyBy Jason Lenz, Pro Staff
Can the fish of 10,000 casts be caught on a fly? With the popularity of musky fishing exploding over the last couple of years and musky populations booming across the nation, many fly fishermen have been asking themselves this question. Muskies definitely can be caught on a fly rod and there are certain times of the year I’d put my fly rod up against any baitcast rod.
I had been catching muskies for years and had already been inflicted with “musky fever” before I ever decided to try to catch one on a fly rod. I decided to give it a try a couple of summers back, so I rigged up my fly rod with the largest fly I could find at the fly shop and set out with my float tube to my favorite musky lake. When I arrived, the lake was dead still...

Beginner’s Luck By Ben Jorgensen, In the Field
I once heard a man say, “It’s better to be lucky than good.” I am still pondering the truth to that statement, but I will say, luck sure does make for a good story. This is especially true for the happy-go-lucky first-timer, when the dice seem to roll in your favor.
It was the morning of my first deer hunt. I didn’t know what to expect, but the combination of my nerves and excitement made 4:30 am seem much less tiresome than I had predicted. We loaded the truck and started out into the darkness of morning, heading to our nearby hunting land. I remember looking out the window for about 3 minutes and thinking I’ll just jump out and wax a deer if I see one. The next thing I knew, I awoke to my dad’s voice, “Ben… let’s go get ‘em.” We were parked on the edge of field a quarter mile from our stands. ...
